During the Gift for Life Block Walk®, breast cancer survivors are honored as they show the community hope, courage, strength and victory over breast cancer.
Volunteer survivors, including Sisters Network® Inc. members, are paired up with other volunteer supporters to canvass a small assigned neighborhood area. Breast health and other materials are delivered door-to-door along with breast self awareness teaching. This year’s contact will concentrate on the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center neighborhood. Parklawn Y families will participate to recognize our breast cancer awareness call to action and education in their neighborhood.
All community participants and volunteers are invited back to the Dr. Martin Luther King Community Center for refreshments, entertainment, healthy living workshops, and vendors. Breast cancer survivors are treated to “survivor suite” fellowship and surprises.
This free breast cancer awareness month event provides vital culturally sensitive education to African American and Latina men and women. Everyone is welcome.
White, Hawaiian and African-American women have the highest incidence of invasive breast cancer in the United States.
African-American women have the highest death rate from breast cancer and are more likely to be diagnosed with a later stage of breast cancer than White women.
